Isaly’s keeps traditions alive by reviving traditional flavors.

Before chipped chop ham, Isaly’s was famous for ice cream.

The family-owned, over-a-century-old dairy has been in the ice cream game since 1904, and is known for their unique flavors, skyscraper cones –  cones that trade the typical round dip for a towering, inverted cone-shaped scoop – and the creation of the Klondike Bar

Their story begins in 1833, when Christian Isaly emigrated from Switzerland to Monroe County, Ohio. He continued the family tradition of cheesemaking, and eventually, thanks to their deli products and ice creams, the company opened a chain of retail stores and became a household name.

(Pittsburghers love Isaly’s chipped chopped ham so much that the thinly-sliced ham loaf is often referred to as “Pittsburgh style.”)

Though the Isaly family sold the company in 1972, their ice cream traditions live on through the most recent owners, The Conroys of Conroy Foods, who uncovered a box of Isaly’s memorabilia in 2017. This box contained an original Isaly’s skyscraper scoop and all of the ice cream recipes.

Today, Isaly’s classics, including chipped chopped ham, condiments, pints of ice cream, and more, can be found in stores across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, or purchased online. This includes pints of the company’s latest release, which follows the success of last year’s toasted fudge almond flavor revival: chocolate marshmallow.

Chocolate marshmallow, based on Isaly’s rich, chocolate ice cream, is ribboned with rivers of creamy marshmallow. The flavor will join the rest of Isaly’s pint portfolio, most of which was revived after finding the recipes in 2017  – toasted almond fudge, whitehouse cherry, vanilla, mint chocolate chip, maricopa, and chocolate – on shelves at Giant Eagle, Kuhn’s, Shop n Save, and more.
