Treat yourself to a cool, creamy scoop of ice cream at one of Pittsburgh’s localize cream parlors.

You know how it goes: I scream, you scream, we scream… all for a few scoops of creamy ice cream stacked high on a cone. Find your perfect summer scoop, sandwich, or sundae at one of these local ice cream shops.

Page Dairy Mart

This under-the-bridge, Southside ice cream joint – celebrating its 70th anniversary – doesn’t hold back. Massive swirls of their soft-serve cradle cake, brownies, or apple dumplings, smothered in hot fudge, cinnamon apples, or caramel. A must-have: a cookie sundae topped with a chocolate chip cookie from Homestead’s Nancy B’s Bakery.

Sugar Spell Scoops

Perhaps the most whimsical ice cream parlor in the Pittsburgh area, Sugar Spell Scoops is all vegan. Their delicious nut-based scoops will surprise you. Many of their pre-order-only novelty pints are inspired by the seasons, holidays, or even TV shows. Their homage to The Office was a quick sellout, so keep an eye on their social media for the next flavor release.

Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream

Whether you’re dairy-free, vegan, or omnivore, Millie’s has something for you. Grab a scoop of one of their classic flavors – Chad’s Vanilla, Best Chocolate, Coffee Break, and more – and throw it in one of their homemade waffle cones. The best part? A trio of marshmallows at the bottom.

Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwiches

You’re going to need two hands to enjoy a Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwich, with a thick layer of seasonally-available flavors stuffed between two of their housemade cookies. Look for black raspberry on a sugar cookie, blackberry on double-chocolate, lemon cream on graham, and more. They also sell their cookie dough, ready-to-bake, by the bag.

Happy Day Dessert Factory

Just over one year old, Happy Day scoops up hard ice cream in flavors such as Birthday Cake, Cherry Vanilla, and Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. The shop also carries custard, water ice, and dairy-free soft-serve made with almond milk. Their specialty items combine all of the above in mystifyingly delicious ways.

Sewickley Confectionery

“Ice cream and so much more” is the motto at Sewickley Confectionery. Along with old-school cones and pints of Perry’s Ice Cream (in 32 different flavors!) find slow-churned, silky, Italian-style gelato and locally-produced goods – everything from fresh eggs to Gilligan’s Sorbet – in the shop.
