5 Tips for Designing Your Dream Kitchen

When building a new home, one of the most exciting parts is designing your dream kitchen! Our in-house design team at Eddy Homes has recommended key areas to consider to ensure your space not only looks beautiful, but is personalized to your needs.
1. Think About Functionality
It is important to understand how you use your current kitchen. What areas of your current kitchen do not work for you? Besides cooking, how do you use your kitchen (i.e. Entertaining? Kids Homework Zone? Working from Home?)
2. Consider Appliances
Before designing your cabinets, ask yourself: Do you love to bake and need a double oven? Do you have a large family and need an oversized refrigerator? Your appliances will play a large role in thinking of the aesthetics of your gourmet kitchen. Eddy Homes partners with Don’s Appliances— they are experts and can show you different types of appliances and different brands to fit your dream!
3. What Are You Storing in Your Kitchen?
What items will you need to store? Food, large appliances, small appliances, cleaning utensils, baking sheets, silverware? We recommend items to help keep you organized – tray dividers for your oversized baking sheets, and deeper drawers in your cabinets instead of shelves and doors. If you love to cook, add spice pull outs to keep your favorite spices right next to your range for easy access!
4. Incorporate Three Types of Lighting
General, Task, and Accent. A dynamic lighting plan incorporates all three. General lighting, most often accomplished by recessed lighting, produces the general glow. Task lighting is intended to help you while you’re at work— under cabinet lighting illuminates your countertops for cooking needs. Accent lighting brings the eye to an architectural element, and it can be achieved by adding down light to cabinets with glass or up lighting to the top of your cabinets.
5. Select the Right Materials
We advise you pick finishes that stand the test of time. Consider cabinet finish and style, hardware, countertops, kitchen sink and faucet, and backsplash. There are many options for each of these selections! For example, granite or quartz - granite countertops have been a staple in kitchens for years, and each slab is unique and heat resistant. Quartz is harder and more durable than granite and marble - it is also a maintenance free material, so no need to seal it yearly or polish it!
