Vintage Gifts Are a Sustainable Choice

Climate change is the issue of our time, and finding ways to live responsibly is on everyone’s mind. How do you keep the joy and happiness of a wedding at full volume even as you ponder how to consume fewer resources?

Giving vintage finds as a wedding gift is a beautiful option. Get to know your newlyweds’ tastes by scanning their Instagram feeds, or by looking at their home when you next visit. What do they like to do? What are they in the habit of eating or drinking? What do they need?

If they are budding mixologists, Pittsburgh’s thrift, vintage and antique shops are overflowing with beautiful things our grandparents and great-grandparents left behind. Enter a fine place like the Wexford Antique Center on Church Road with two bits of information: what’s their favorite color and what is their favorite drink. You will surely find a set of glasses that suits.

Do they have a sweet tooth? Pick up a stack of classic gold and white dessert plates. Do they drink tea? Pre-war gems from Bavaria, Czechoslovakia and Japan are hiding in every corner. Do they bake? Amazing copper and cast iron ovenware can hang on the wall as well as hang out in the oven.

Ask the store you buy from if they’ll accept a return from the newlyweds should the gift be off target. Some will say no, and some will agree.

All the while, be comforted that you’re not stressing out the planet by buying something new. And you might even have some fun doing it.
