The Caesar Shakeup is one of five salad kits produced by the “forward-thinking farm.”

“We love Caesar, and the world loves Caesar.” And so goes the reasoning behind Fifth Season’s Caesar Shakeup salad kit, a twist on the classic dish using their new variety of green, Baby Romaine.

Fifth Season, Pittsburgh’s resident urban, vertical farm is reimagining the food system. It could be the middle of winter in Pittsburgh and the farm – stacks of fields run mostly by artificial intelligence and robotics – is producing fresh greens.

The Caesar Shakeup is one of five salad kits produced by the “forward-thinking farm.” Each kit uses a variety of their greens, from the Bridge City Blend, a mix of crisp lettuces, to their farm-grown spinach. Fifth Season’s Caesar Shakeup is the first to use the Baby Romaine, a green Emily Ellis, head of consumer products for the farm, calls “super crispy and full of flavor.”

“Even though we wanted to add some fun twists to this classic salad, we knew we wanted to keep some things sacred, and romaine was one of them,” Ellis continues. Their spin on the salad includes pretzel croutons, white beans, and shaved carrots. “We added healthier, fresher components via the white beans and carrots, but still kept the core of Caesar with the dressing and romaine crunch. The pretzel bites, though, might be our favorite part. This salty, fun alternative to croutons provides an elevated crunch experience,” Ellis says.
